Abstract

The Pelican Field is located in the southwest sector of the Bass Basin. Closure is provided by a large rollover anticline associated with two growth faults. The Eastern View Coal Measures provide the potential source rocks, the reservoir sands and the seals.

The sands of the more prospective lower Eastern View Coal Measures are very discontinuous across the Pelican structure and often shaley. Reservoir quality is further reduced by the presence of kaolinite which has considerably lowered the permeability of the lower sands.

A change in the formation water salinity down the section creates problems in calculating accurate water resistivities. This leads to problems in predicting accurate water saturations. Calculated gas saturations were generally very low.

The lack of reservoir sand continuity, low permeabilities and high water saturations indicate that the economic development of the Pelican field is very marginal.
