Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Petroleum Geology & Geophysics)

Find and Unlock Oil and Gas Reserves

The B.Sc.(Honours) degree is a one-year full-time program for graduates who have completed a B.Sc. or equivalent in geoscience and are interested in using geology and geophysics to explore for and develop oil and gas fields. A B.Sc.(Honours) degree is the entry level qualification for a career in the Australian petroleum industry. The ASP is unique in Australia in offering an Honours program which is specifically designed to prepare graduates for such a career. Our students receive a thorough grounding in the principles of exploration and development geoscience, whilst being exposed to the practical aspects of the oil and gas industry gained by our staff through years of experience around the world.

This Honours degree consists of a coursework program and a research project which is written up in a thesis. The coursework program covers the spectrum of disciplines involved in petroleum geoscience and is focused in the first half of the year. The second half of the year is dedicated to the research project, although time will be allocated for students to start work on their projects from the start of the program. Research projects are generally provided by petroleum companies or government agencies, although data may be provided from research projects being conducted by academics within the ASP.

The School is proud of the excellent employment record of its graduates. The Honours program is widely recognised as providing the essential training for a career in the industry, as well as a thorough preparation for postgraduate study. The curriculum is periodically updated in consultation with the petroleum industry to maintain its relevance.

Applications for admission to the BSc (Honours) Petroleum Geology and Geophysics Program will be reviewed in two rounds. In 2011, the first round will be reviewed on 31st August, and the second round on the 31st October. Successful applicants will be notified shortly after these dates. Unsuccesful applicants reviewed in the first round will be carried over and included in the second round of review. All applicants reviewed in the second round of review will be notified shortly afterwards of the outcome. If places on the program remain, applications received after the 31st October will be reviewed soon after they have been recieved, up until the program starts.

If you have any enquiries about this degree program, please contact the Program Co-ordinator, Dr Kathryn Amos or the Australian School of Petroleum Office.

Geoscience

Petroleum Geoscientists apply geological understanding and sophisticated methods to find and produce oil and gas from rocks which are typically several kilometres below the earth's surface.
