Major ARC Funding Success for ASP

Prof. Pavel Bedrikovetsky was awarded $310, 000 for an ARC-funded Discovery Project 'Modelling the capillary entrapment phenomena and integrity of geological reservoirs for clean energy, water and waste management technologies'. Pavel was also awarded $448,000 for an ARC-funded Linkage Project 'Development of innovative technologies for oil production based on the advanced theory of suspension flows in porous media' The Linkage project is receiving considerable additional support from Santos.


SPE Student Paper Prize Winner an Under Graduate at ASP.

Dan O'Reilly won the Australia region SPE student paper contest and thus won an expenses paid trip to attend the SPE Annual meeting in the US in October where he presented at the International Student Paper Contest. This is the top award/level achievable for undergraduate petroleum engineering students. Dan came 2nd out of around 20 regional winners.

Congratulations to Dan who is pictured, in the centre, with his award.


Four ASP students are recipients of the Society of Petroleum Engineers Southern Asia Pacific Region Scholarships.

Four out of the five SPE scholarship recipients are students of the Australian School of Petroleum. Danqing Dong and Elferrerious Albert each received The 2009 SPE SA Scholarship of $3000-. John Cicceralli and Michelle Taye received The 2009 SPE SA Merit award of $1500- each. Danqing Dong also received the SPE STAR Southern Asia Pacific Regional Scholarship and was awarded $1666-66. The recipients were selected on their academic performance, extra activity/awards as well as their individual financial circumstances.

The 2009 Scholarships and Merit awards are sponsored by Petrolab and SPE international, and were presented at June's SPE SA luncheon. Those pictured in the presentation photo from left to right are- Gordon Moseby SPE, John Ciccarelli, Michelle Taye, Elferrerious Albert, Danqing Dong all ASP and Nicola Xu SPE.


PhD student Sarah Riordan received an award from PESA for the Best petroleum geoscience paper accepted for publication in 2008.

Sarah receives her prize

Sarah Riordan, a PhD student at the Australian School of Petroleum, was awarded the Best Petroleum Geoscience paper accepted for publication by any full or part-time student enrolled in a S.S. tertiary institution in 2008. A certificate and prize of $1000, was presented by Simon Brealey the president of the PESA SA branch at the June PESA meeting.

The paper, co-authored by S.J. Lang and T.H.D. Payenberg, is titled, Geologically constrained grid design in shallow-marine reservoir models: An example from the Flounder Field, Gippsland Basin, Australia.


2008 SPE Scholarships Awarded

Two Australian School of Petroleum students were awarded scholarships from SPE. The presentations were made at the SPE Luncheon meeting.

The students to receive the awards were Thi Kim Nguyen, in her 4th year of a combined Petroleum/Chemical Engineering degree, and Brenda Chang, in her 2nd year of a Petroleum Engineering degree. They are pictured with Keith Boyle, SPE SA Section Chairman and Leo Roodhart the 2009 SPE President.


Treena Bron Receives IAS Grant

Treena Bron a Geoscience PhD student has won the highly competitive IAS grant which is worth 1000 Euros..

This is the fourth grant Treena has been awarded this year and in addition she also received extra industry funding. All together Treena has secured more than A$15 000 of external funding/grants for her exciting PhD project.


Emma Hissey receives the 2008 PESA SA Graduate prize for High Academic Acheivement

Emma Hissey was awarded the 2008 PESA SA Graduate Prize for High Academic Acheivement in Petroleum Geoscience.

Emma's Honours thesis, titled "Analysis of a marginal marine, thin-bedded, heterolithic reservoir: Implications for in-place volumes and static connectivity", earned her the $2000 the award, which was presented at the PESA meeting in October.


Associate Professor Bruce Ainsworth receives an Impact Accolade Award

At the recent ARIIA Awards night dinner Associate Professor Bruce Ainsworth received an Impact Accolade Award.

The award was for his work with the WAVE Consortium and recognised, significant contributors in the innovation community. Bruce is pictured with Dr Rachel Nanson, also a member of the WAVE Team.


Stephen Wood Wins Best Poster Prize at EABS111 2008

Stephen Wood (MSc Petroleum Geoscience student) has won the Best Poster Prize at the Eastern Australasian Basins Symposium Conference (EABS III) held in Sydney (14-17 September 2008).

The title of his poster was: Lacustrine Petroleum Systems in the Papua New Guinea Foreland.


AAPG Regional Distinguished Lecturer Tour 2008 , Australia, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand

Hand Over Ceremony

Associate Professor Bruce Ainsworth was this years AAPG Asia Pacific Regional Distinguished Lecturer. His talk focussed on the prediction of reservoir compartmentalization in marginal marine deposits. The trip took in nine cities in total starting in Perth in mid August and finishing in Adelaide in early September. He also visited Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Port Moresby, Auckland, New Plymouth and Sydney. Whilst in Port Moresby, Bruce also had the honour of representing the Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia (PESA) in a handover ceremony for a new field vehicle for the Earth Sciences Division at the University of Papua New Guinea. The vehicle was provided by kind donations from Exxon, Oil Search, PESA and SPE.


2008 JF Kennedy Memorial Petroleum Engineering Entrepreneurial Scholarship

Christopher Trzeciak, a Petroleum Engineering Honours student was the recipient of the 2008 JF Kennedy Memorial Petroleum Engineering Entrepreneurial Scholarship. The scholarship of $20,000 and field work with ExtremeMachining, is awarded to students who demonstrate entrepreneurship, community involvement, innovation and academic merit. The award is to assist with educational and living costs.


Professor Hemanta Sarma receives a Carrick Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning

Professor Hemanta Sarma was congratulated by Fred McDougall, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President(Academic) for his achievement in receiving a Carrick Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.

The Citation, for initiating students into the profession of petroleum engineering while interacting with them to secure their welfare as individuals, and success as scholars, is deserved recognition of the contribution he is making to the education and welfare of students studying petroleum engineering.
