Facilities

The official opening of the Santos Petroleum Engineering Building by the Prime Minister in August 2002 highlighted the School's excellent facilities, which are at the core of its teaching and research.

The School offers well-equipped laboratories, modern lecture theatres and seminar rooms, and comfortable offices for staff and postgraduate students, all located in one new building situated on the North Terrace Campus of the University, and a short walk from the heart of the city of Adelaide.

The School owns or has shared access to a comprehensive suite of facilities supporting research and training. These include:

  • The South Australian Virtual Reality Centre
  • Test well
  • Computing hardware and software
  • Library
  • Geoscience facilities
    • Petrological, UV and cathodoluminescence microscopy, image analysis capture and software
    • SEM and electron microprobe (Adelaide Microscopy)
    • XRD, XRF, carbon and oxygen isotopes (School of Earth and Environmental Sciences)
    • Flume tank
  • Fluids Laboratory
    • PVT, rheometer, densitometer, gas chromatograph and mass spectrometer
  • Rock Properties Laboratory
    • Liquid permeameter, gas permeameter, helium porosimeter, mercury porosimeter for capillary pressure measurements
  • Drilling Fluid Laboratory
    • viscometers, balances and filtration units
  • EOR/IOR Operations Laboratory
    • Multi-phase high pressure, high temperature, core flooding apparatus.
